Who Can’t Have Wegovy?

Wegovy injections are not suitable for:

Switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy: Everything You Need to Know

If you’re currently using Mounjaro and considering switching to Wegovy, the good news is that it’s usually possible – provided your healthcare provider agrees it’s safe for you. Typically, you’ll need to leave at least seven days between your final dose of Mounjaro and your first dose of Wegovy. Your new starting dose will depend on the amount of Mounjaro you were previously taking.

Why Consider Switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy?

There are several reasons people make the switch:

  • Cost: Wegovy is often more affordable than Mounjaro.
  • Side Effects: Some patients find Wegovy easier to tolerate.
  • Personal Preference: You may simply prefer the way Wegovy works for you.
  • Additional Health Benefits: Wegovy is licensed to reduce cardiovascular risks in people with obesity and heart disease – something Mounjaro is not currently approved for.

Both medications have been shown to help patients achieve significant weight loss, with recent studies reporting up to 20.7% body weight reduction for Wegovy users.

How to Switch from Mounjaro to Wegovy

  1. Complete a new Online Consultation Request Wegovy by submitting your details online.
  2. Clinical Assessment:    Discuss  with Laura at your next consultation
  3. Get Your Prescription: If approved, you’ll receive a Wegovy prescription.
  4. Stop Mounjaro: Do not take any more doses.
  5. Wait 7 Days: Allow a short “washout period” between medications.
  6. Start Wegovy: Begin treatment at the recommended starting dose and continue your weight loss journey.

Important: The manufacturer suggests a 30-day gap for maximum safety, but most patients switch after 7 days to avoid interrupting progress. Always follow your prescriber’s advice.

What is the recommended dose?

The most weight loss is seen once you reach the maximum dose of 15mg but this will depend on how your body responds to the medication and if you get any side effects.

Important: Never increase the dose higher than recommended by your doctor – this will increase the risk of strong side effects, severe illness, and might cause you to stop or pause your treatment, which will hinder your weight loss.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Mounjaro, what you do next will depend on how long it’s been since your last dose was due.

  • If it’s been 4 days or less since your last dose was due, take it as soon as you remember. You can then continue treatment as normal on your usual day and time, even if this means taking 2 doses a few days apart.
  • If it’s been longer than 4 days, skip the missed dose then continue treatment when your next dose is due.
  • You’ll usually follow the Mounjaro dosing schedule, which means starting at a lower dose before increasing every 4 weeks.

Mounjaro side effects

Whether you’re taking Mounjaro for weight loss or diabetes, it has some side effects, although not everybody will get them.

Very common side effects of Mounjaro include:

  • diarrhoea
  • feeling sick (nausea)
  • vomiting (being sick)
  • constipation
  • low blood sugar (if taken alongside certain diabetes medications)

These side effects are not usually severe and are most likely to happen when you first start taking Mounjaro. Mounjaro is introduced gradually to reduce these side effects, allowing your body to adjust to the treatment. Very common side effects should improve within a few weeks, but speak to your doctor if they persist.

Mounjaro can also cause low blood sugar when used with other medicines for type 2 diabetes, such as insulin. Tell your doctor if you get symptoms of low blood sugar, which include shaking, sweating, dizziness, hunger, and an increased heart rate.

Common side effects of Mounjaro include:

  • fast pulse
  • mild to moderate allergic reaction, such as eczema, itching, or rash
  • pain in the stomach
  • constipation
  • indigestion
  • bloating
  • gas and burping
  • heartburn or reflux
  • fatigue
  • an increase in the levels of pancreatic enzymes, which will show up on a blood test
  • itching, redness, or irritation at the injection site
  • low blood pressure
  • dizziness
  • hair loss

Uncommon side effects of Mounjaro include:

  • gallstones
  • an increase in calcitonin (a hormone that helps to control calcium levels)
  • weight loss
  • injection site pain
  • an inflamed pancreas (acute pancreatitis) – speak to your doctor straight away if you notice severe stomach and/or lower back pain that isn’t going away
  • low blood sugar (when using Mounjaro alongside metformin)

Are there any long-term side effects?

Mounjaro is not known to cause any long-term side effects. If you do get any side effects, they will probably go away or get better within a few weeks or will stop when you stop taking the medicine.

Are there any serious side effects of Mounjaro?

Mounjaro, like other medications, can cause a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis). This is a medical emergency and you must call 999 or get to A&E straight away. Symptoms include:

  • breathing difficulties
  • throat, face and mouth swelling
  • fainting

Mounjaro can also cause an inflamed pancreas, known as acute pancreatitis. It might also cause gastroparesis, or dangerously low blood sugars in overdose. These require urgent medical attention, so speak to your doctor or call 111 or 999 if you have intense and persistent stomach and back pain, or if you think you may have used too much.

How to manage the side effects of Mounjaro

To manage the side effects of Mounjaro, you can:

  • take your treatment at the same time and day each week
  • manage nausea symptoms by sipping cold water, avoiding greasy, heavy meals, and eating smaller meals more often
  • make sure to eat enough fibre
  • stay hydrated
  • take anti-diarrhoea tablets if needed
  • only take the dose prescribed to you and avoid increasing your dose unless your doctor tells you to
  • let your doctor know if you have any side effects that bother you or aren’t going away on their own
  • speak to your doctor if you take other medications that may interact with Mounjaro or cause side effects

Am I Eligible for Wegovy?

You may qualify for Wegovy if:

  • Your BMI is 30 or above, or
  • Your BMI is 27 or above with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure or heart disease.

Already on Mounjaro and now under these BMI thresholds? You might still be approved, especially for weight maintenance – subject to clinical review.

 

What’s Different About Wegovy?

Both Mounjaro and Wegovy belong to a class of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists, which reduce appetite and slow digestion. However:

  • Mounjaro also targets GIP receptors, helping with both weight loss and blood sugar control.
  • Injection Pens: Wegovy only needs priming before the first use. Mounjaro requires priming before every dose.

Storage: Both need refrigeration before first use. Once opened, Mounjaro lasts 30 days at room temperature; Wegovy lasts 42 days.

How to Start Wegovy After Mounjaro

  • Wait at least 7 days after your last Mounjaro dose.
  • Begin Wegovy at the dose recommended by Laura – usually based on your previous Mounjaro dose.
  • Inject once weekly using the pre-filled pen into your stomach, thigh, or upper arm.

Will I Experience Side Effects?

Most people transition smoothly. You may notice mild nausea, bloating, or stomach upset for the first 1–2 weeks, especially if switching quickly. The longer the gap between medications, the lower the risk of overlapping side effects.
